    A Model for Classical Space-time Co-ordinates

    Get PDF
Field equations with general covariance are interpreted as equations for a target space describing physical space time co-ordinates, in terms of an underlying base space with conformal invariance. These equations admit an infinite number of inequivalent Lagrangian descriptions. A model for reparametrisation invariant membranes is obtained by reversing the roles of base and target space variables in these considerations.Comment: 9 pages, Latex. Fast-slow asymptotic for semi-analytical ignition criteria in FitzHugh-Nagumo system

    Get PDF
We study the problem of initiation of excitation waves in the FitzHugh-Nagumo model. Our approach follows earlier works and is based on the idea of approximating the boundary between basins of attraction of propagating waves and of the resting state as the stable manifold of a critical solution. Here, we obtain analytical expressions for the essential ingredients of the theory by singular perturbation using two small parameters, the separation of time scales of the activator and inhibitor, and the threshold in the activator's kinetics. This results in a closed analytical expression for the strength-duration curve.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, as accepted to Chaos on 2017/06/2

Asthma - is survival good enough?

    Get PDF
Advances in asthma management, particularly the introduction of controller medication of which inhaled corticosteroids are the most important, has resulted in a steady decline in asthma mortality in most countries. This is usually accompanied by a decline in episodes of near-fatal asthma attacks and hospitalisations, and a reduction in other indicators of asthma morbidity. These gains have led to a shift in thinking on the management of asthma, away from simply preventing death and hospitalisations, toward achieving and maintaining sustained control of all clinical features

Consolidating Electrorefined Spent Nuclear Fuel Waste – Analysis and Experiment

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT Argonne National Laboratory has developed a process to immobilize waste salt containing fission products, uranium, and transuranic elements as chlorides in a glass-bonded ceramic waste form. This salt was generated in the electrorefining operation used in the electrometallurical treatment of spent EBR-II fuel. The ceramic waste process culminates with an elevated temperature operation. The processing conditions used by the furnace, for demonstration scale and production scale operations, are to be developed at Argonne National Laboratory. To assist in selecting the processing conditions of the furnace and to reduce the number of costly experiments, a finite difference model was developed to predict the consolidation of the ceramic waste. The model accurately predicted the heating as well as the bulk density of the ceramic waste form. The methodology used to develop the computer model and a comparison of the analysis to experimental data is presented

Finite Euler Hierarchies And Integrable Universal Equations

Recent work on Euler hierarchies of field theory Lagrangians iteratively constructed {}from their successive equations of motion is briefly reviewed. On the one hand, a certain triality structure is described, relating arbitrary field theories, {\it classical\ts} topological field theories -- whose classical solutions span topological classes of manifolds -- and reparametrisation invariant theories -- generalising ordinary string and membrane theories. On the other hand, {\it finite} Euler hierarchies are constructed for all three classes of theories. These hierarchies terminate with {\it universal\ts} equations of motion, probably defining new integrable systems as they admit an infinity of Lagrangians. Speculations as to the possible relevance of these theories to quantum gravity are also suggested.Comment: (replaces previous unprintable version corrupted mailer) 13 p., (Plain TeX), DTP-92/3

Lightning Jump Algorithm and Relation to Thunderstorm Cell Tracking, GLM Proxy and Other Meteorological Measurements

    Get PDF
The lightning jump algorithm has a robust history in correlating upward trends in lightning to severe and hazardous weather occurrence. The algorithm uses the correlation between the physical principles that govern an updraft's ability to produce microphysical and kinematic conditions conducive for electrification and its role in the development of severe weather conditions. Recent work has demonstrated that the lightning jump algorithm concept holds significant promise in the operational realm, aiding in the identification of thunderstorms that have potential to produce severe or hazardous weather. However, a large amount of work still needs to be completed in spite of these positive results. The total lightning jump algorithm is not a stand-alone concept that can be used independent of other meteorological measurements, parameters, and techniques. For example, the algorithm is highly dependent upon thunderstorm tracking to build lightning histories on convective cells. Current tracking methods show that thunderstorm cell tracking is most reliable and cell histories are most accurate when radar information is incorporated with lightning data. In the absence of radar data, the cell tracking is a bit less reliable but the value added by the lightning information is much greater. For optimal application, the algorithm should be integrated with other measurements that assess storm scale properties (e.g., satellite, radar). Therefore, the recent focus of this research effort has been assessing the lightning jump's relation to thunderstorm tracking, meteorological parameters, and its potential uses in operational meteorology. Furthermore, the algorithm must be tailored for the optically-based GOES-R Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM), as what has been observed using Very High Frequency Lightning Mapping Array (VHF LMA) measurements will not exactly translate to what will be observed by GLM due to resolution and other instrument differences. Herein, we present some of the promising aspects and challenges encountered in utilizing objective tracking and GLM proxy data, as well as recent results that demonstrate the value added information gained by combining the lightning jump concept with traditional meteorological measurements

Distorted Heisenberg Algebra and Coherent States for Isospectral Oscillator Hamiltonians

The dynamical algebra associated to a family of isospectral oscillator Hamiltonians is studied through the analysis of its representation in the basis of energy eigenstates. It is shown that this representation becomes similar to that of the standard Heisenberg algebra, and it is dependent of a parameter w≥0w\geq 0. We name it {\it distorted Heisenberg algebra}, where ww is the distortion parameter. The corresponding coherent states for an arbitrary ww are derived, and some particular examples are discussed in full detail. A prescription to produce the squeezing, by adequately selecting the initial state of the system, is given.Comment: 21 pages, Latex, 3 figures available as hard copies upon request from the first Autho

A comparison of Pfam and MEROPS: Two databases, one comprehensive, and one specialised.

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: We wished to compare two databases based on sequence similarity: one that aims to be comprehensive in its coverage of known sequences, and one that specialises in a relatively small subset of known sequences. One of the motivations behind this study was quality control. Pfam is a comprehensive collection of alignments and hidden Markov models representing families of proteins and domains. MEROPS is a catalogue and classification of enzymes with proteolytic activity (peptidases or proteases). These secondary databases are used by researchers worldwide, yet their contents are not peer reviewed. Therefore, we hoped that a systematic comparison of the contents of Pfam and MEROPS would highlight missing members and false-positives leading to improvements in quality of both databases. An additional reason for carrying out this study was to explore the extent of consensus in the definition of a protein family. RESULTS: About half (89 out of 174) of the peptidase families in MEROPS overlapped single Pfam families. A further 32 MEROPS families overlapped multiple Pfam families. Where possible, new Pfam families were built to represent most of the MEROPS families that did not overlap Pfam. When comparing the numbers of sequences found in the overlap between a MEROPS family and its corresponding Pfam family, in most cases the overlap was substantial (52 pairs of MEROPS and Pfam families had an intersection size of greater than 75% of the union) but there were some differences in the sets of sequences included in the MEROPS families versus the overlapping Pfam families. CONCLUSIONS: A number of the discrepancies between MEROPS families and their corresponding Pfam families arose from differences in the aims and philosophies of the two databases. Examination of some of the discrepancies highlighted additional members of families, which have subsequently been added in both Pfam and MEROPS. This has led to improvements in the quality of both databases. Overall there was a great deal of consensus between the databases in definitions of a protein family

Mass as a Relativistic Quantum Observable

A field state containing photons propagating in different directions has a non vanishing mass which is a quantum observable. We interpret the shift of this mass under transformations to accelerated frames as defining space-time observables canonically conjugated to energy-momentum observables. Shifts of quantum observables differ from the predictions of classical relativity theory in the presence of a non vanishing spin. In particular, quantum redshift of energy-momentum is affected by spin. Shifts of position and energy-momentum observables however obey simple universal rules derived from invariance of canonical commutators.Comment: 5 pages, revised versio
